GM Introduces Google Gemini AI Assistant in Vehicles
General Motors has announced a significant development during its GM Forward event, revealing plans to integrate a Google Gemini-powered AI assistant into its vehicles starting next year. The initial rollout will target models with Google built-in, including popular brands like Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC. This AI assistant aims to enhance the user experience by allowing drivers to engage in natural conversations with their car's infotainment system, improving functionality with Google applications such as Google Maps.
GM's senior VP of software and services, Dave Richardson, emphasized the advantages of using large language models like Gemini, which can understand varied speech patterns and maintain context from prior interactions, offering a more intuitive experience. Unlike a simple integration with Android Auto, this initiative will embed the AI assistant directly into the vehicle?s operating system, enabling control over various systems such as air conditioning and maintenance alerts. The Gemini assistant will be delivered through an over-the-air update for OnStar-equipped vehicles from 2015 onward, and GM will continue to explore other AI options as well.
